Desperate Housewives remark about Filipino doctors
It’s been circulating around Filipino blogs about the scene that was shown in the US on Sept 30, Dr. Mayfair told a visibly terrified Mayer that the word “menopause” seems to open a Pandora’s Box for the age-conscious middle-aged woman.
“They hear ageing, brittle bones, loss of sexual drive…” said the doctor who was cut midway from his explanation by an agitated Mayer.
“Before we go any further, can I check those diplomas? ‘Coz, I just want to make sure they’re not from some med school in the Philippines,” she said while searching for the doctor’s records. Watch the clip.

boycott DH, until they apologized in public.

This is definitely something that cannot be tolerated. Such remarks are uncalled for. There is no humor in making those type of comments, moreso on national TV.
October 3rd, 2007 at 9:14 am
oh….on the other hand, would that also mean the best doctors come from the Philippines and she’s scared of the truth?
October 3rd, 2007 at 11:01 am
It shows there are still ignorant racist lingering. In case these idiots dont know yet, US hospitals are now bringing in doctors from India to work cheaply for 5-10 years instead of hiring US graduates. Pinoy doctors are much better than Indians.

This is a pure insult to us filipino doctors. We demand an apology form the TV network immediately. This shows the america still lingers with a culture of racism. Most of the Filipino doctors are not only knowlegeable but also the most industrious and CARING one.

there is no place in this world for racism. sure we are all guilty of being racist perhaps in the context of private parties where jokes circulate, but this display of racism is too public already.
pinoys dont deserve comments like these.
they should apologize. period.

I’m so upset. I’m a fan of desperate housewives but I will throw DH seasons 1-3 cds when I pass by Session Road (Baguio’s Main Road) later. I’m a member of the medical profession and I feel outraged by those comments made by Teri Hatcher.
We take care of their old people and deliver their babies. What a reward!

lets keep an open mind here guys. if you’ll think about it, its not teri fault of why she said those things about filipino doctors. its actually the script writers who should be blamed. the actors follow whats on the script, and they have no say on it.

let’s give the indians a break please. let’s practice what we preach. nobody deserves 9-11, not even racists… i demand an apology though from abc and desperate housewives because what they did was ignorant and appalling. statements like that are supposed to be unheard of in this time. i don’t believe the people in that network realize how big a responsibility they have. tsk tsk little people with even smaller feet in humongous shoes never fail to stumble.
October 4th, 2007 at 12:00 pm
Isn’t it a bit hypocritical to say filipino doctors are better than indians? What is the difference between that and what DH aired? You are not making yourselves look better by doing so. To say how wrong it is for the show to air this, and to turn around and belittle India’s doctors…. something to think about.
October 4th, 2007 at 1:14 pm
Guys/gals please stick to the point.. no one should belittle other race and that’s main issue here. Sorry Ernan but i have to take back your comment.
October 4th, 2007 at 7:46 pm
Hi! I’m an avid fan of Desperate Housewives. But the remarks made by one of their actors is below the belt to our Filipino doctors. The script writer doesn’t realize the impact of what he did. Filipino doctors are very caring, intelligent & patient.
We demand a public apology from the TV network, script writer and program director.
We will boycott the succeeding episodes.
October 4th, 2007 at 10:42 pm
This is not just an insult for doctors or nurses from the Philippines but it is a direct insult to every Filipino. Let’s just keep the Indians out of this, they are not the ones hurt, lets not hurt them. ABC should doublecheck the qualifications and knowledge and background of their scriptwriters, that was indeed very ignorant of him/her. I too have stopped watching DH since this issue came out and have discouraged others from watching as well.
A PUBLIC APOLOGY IS DEMANDED FROM THE NETWORK, DIRECTOR, MOST ESPECIALLY THE SCRIPT WRITER AND TERI HATCHER WHO APPARENTLY WAS JUST READING THE SCRIPT WITHOUT DIGESTING WHAT SHE WAS SAYING!

“Desperate Housewife” ….American immorality and lewdness. Period.
October 4th, 2007 at 11:56 pm
Very good filipinos for standing up and airing what you feel about this. I wonder why no one in the t.v. network ever stopped it first when they were doing the taping. Indeed, the filipino race is a great race. Hurray! to all filipino medical practicioners working in the u.s. to support their families.
October 5th, 2007 at 11:57 am
Well, the cat’s out of the bag. I just saw the video clip and worldwide viewers have heard and seen the damaging image. The only important thing in the minds of these producers is to draw viewers into their shows.
One way is to cause potential uproar like what is happening. If they have to apologize or to give a positive image to Phil med grads, they have to insert it as part of another episode.
In a week or a few months, most viewers would forget about this episode - including any apologies and the insult. But the Filipino doctors will still be around worldwide doing the best they can to make people well.

Those remarks undermine the integity of Filipino doctors all over the world. While this is a sign of being a desperate housewife, should be
punished by firing her and all Filipinos should take a boycott stance to all the sponsors of the tv program.
October 6th, 2007 at 5:16 am
most of my relatives are in the medical field, my aunts who are nurses and an uncle who’s a doctor has been living and working in the u.s. even before i was born and through out the years i have never heard such a comment made out to them like what we’ve heard from DH. It’s out right racism - and definitely not true! We are one of the best in the world especially in the medical field why? because aside from the brains we also have a heart!
October 6th, 2007 at 12:27 pm
Boycotting the show is not enough. We must all boycott all products advertised on Desperate Housewives, the O’Reilly Show, and Fox News. They’re all racist and insensitive. People like them make derogatory comments using humor as an excuse when they are caught. The only effective way to fight them is with our pocketbooks. If we can get companies to pull their advertising deals from ABC and DH, the show is dead. Then they’ll respect us. Witness Don Imus - after the advertisers pulled out, he got fired.
Can somebody compile a list of all products advertised? I don’t actually watch the show but heard about it on TFC.

you know the meaning of nationalism? better see ur dictionary and digest it properly……….
May 12th, 2008 at 7:55 am
to karuro go: Just because you are not the target of the insult doesn’t mean that you won’t be affected at all, that’s the problem with the PHilippines.. kaya hindi tayo umuunlad.. ganyan ang ugali ng maraming tao dito. mga walang pakialam….. sana pag pumunta ka sa states… maranasan mo kung pano madiscriminate dahil filipino ka… You’re a disgrace to the Filipino race!!!!!! There’s no room in the world for discrimination…. we should boycott the show

I agree with nailalain! The writers, of the popular ABC dramedy, had no business writing that line…unless of course they interviewed Janina San Miguel - Miss Philippines World 2008 first…did they? She does or did attend the University of Santo Tomas…ooops! Maybe there’s a little truth to their research after all.
