Binibining Pilipinas 2008 winning answer?

Really surprised by candidate #15, the 17-year-old Janina San Miguel, a beauty title holder and a graduate of University of the East messed up her Q&A portion but still managed to win the Bb. Pilipinas-World title. Captions courtesy of PMT

Can Filipina women who enter pagaents learn to speak and answer questions in ENGLISH with British or American confidence, and not FOB mannerisms. Stupid Charlene Gonzales embarassed all Filipino-Americans when she answered her final question that she wanted to be like “Wonder Woman”….God, that was the stupidist answer in the world, and embarassed the f**k out of all the FILIPINO-AMERICANS who were viewing the Miss Universe pageant. If you have the video from that year, that definitely was a FOB answer the world will always know. Charlene, honey, I was never so embarassed to be Filipino after watching you answer your final question. FOB to the MAX !!!!

Jane, please learn, this is how to write and speak English properly, dear.
“That is really ridiculous. Why did she become a Miss Philippines if she didn’t know how to speak?
I think she needed more practice before she chose to participate in that pageant.
You know what Janina? You are so beautiful. However, brains is more important than beauty.
We should not just place importance in just our physical attributes, but of all aspects of our being.”

Philippines, in Hawaii, the Hawaiians complain that they lost their language and culture. TRUE…
Now, compare the poverty level between Hawaii and the Philippines. In Hawaii, they don’t have slum-cities around Honolulu.
English was developing quite well. In fact, in 1946, the Philippines had the second strongest economy in Asia. Then, Tagalog was NOT even spoken in 50% of the archipelago. English was used as the instruction in schools. It might have developed into more than what it has become. If you look at it, Tagalog, only benefited the rich and affluent people of Manila. Do you think the people of Metro Manila see the “provinicanos” as their equals? Nope, that is why god created Filipino-Americans to berate the tagalog speakers of Manila.
Remember this, as beautiful and rich of a Filipina as Janina is, she will always be looked down upon by Filipino-Americans because of her terrible english alone. Money and beauty does not equalize an FOB with even the ugliest Filipino-American.

Remember, Tagalog is a second language in most parts of the Philippines EXCEPT Metro Manila. It is only a first language in Manila. If English were still the medium of instruction in all the schools, than Tagalog would be a second language in Manila too.
Maybe then, those people from Manila would not look down at people from the provinces.

I would place more importance for my family to eat, and my kids have jobs when they finish school, than focusing so fuckin’ much on a national identity.
70% of the people of Hawaii are of Asian descent. Filipino, Japanese, Chinese and Korean are the Hawaiian-Asians. They all speak English. They all do not live in poverty. They “blame” the English language and the United States for their high standard of living. What a pity…
Do you think they give a damn about being able to speak Filipino, Japanese, Korean or Chinese? They have jobs, food, money in the bank and careers if they chose to. Get this, less than 0.5% of the Hawaiian population live under the poverty level. Do they really need a cultural identity.
Keep looking for your identity Filipinos. While your people are starving and bickering of what language to use in schools in 2008, blame English for ruining your evolution for a pure culture. Meanwhile, figure out a way to feed the 20 million people who live in your slums.
By the way, Marcos, Estrada, Aquino, Ramos, and Macapagal, was their first language English or Tagalog. They have “nothing” to do with the impoverished and corrupt economy of the present day Philippines? Or is it solely Spain and America’s fault…

To all you folks saying that Philippines would somehow become a rich country by learning English– do you realize how stupid this idea is? The vast majority of the world’s richest countries are not English-speaking– they’re places like Japan, China, Germany, Korea, Taiwan, France and some Arab countries. They use their native languages like Japanese and Korean for education!
Philippines should do the same. Wasting even more time on English is worthless– instead, we should work harder to provide high-quality education in Filipino. When it comes to foreign languages, English should be one of them, so should Spanish, so should German (language of science), so should Japanese. Maybe Arabic for us. And besides, in 25 years we’ll all be speaking Chinese.
